The Johor Golf & Country Club, formerly the Royal Johor Country Club, is situated in the city of Johor Bahru in the southern Malaysian state of Johor. It lies on a 150-hectare, wavy plot in a former catchment area, right next to the Sultan of Johor’s palace. From the center of Johor Bahru, the Johor Golf & Country Club is accessible in seven minutes. The club was founded as the Johore Golf Club in 1968 and initially only had a 9-hole course, for which Dato ‘Ahmad Adam supplied the design, and which golfers could start playing on from 1970. In 1974, the course was extended into an 18-hole parkland course with par 72 and a length of 6,368 meters. The club was awarded royal status in 1984 and was renamed the Royal Johor Country Club. Golf course architect Max Wexler implemented a few fundamental changes to the course between 1991 and 1993. Today, the course in the Johor Golf & Country Club, as it has been called since 2010, features long, broad fairways, mostly two-tiered greens, few doglegs, numerous pot bunkers, and water hazards such as ponds and lakes at 5 of the 18 holes. The back nine, referred to as the Menteri Besar’s Nine, are deemed longer and more difficult than front nine, known as the Tunku Mahkota’s Nine. The Johor Golf & Country Club was the first 18-hole course in Malaysia and has hosted the Iskandar Johor Open since 2007.
