Mauritius Gymkhana Club

The Mauritius Gymkhana Club is located in the city of Vacoas-Phoenix in the center of the African island of Mauritius. It is situated on an even terrain that used to belong to the Royal Navy military base on Mauritius and partly runs along the main street from Vacoas-Phoenix to Floréal. Surrounded by forests, the Mauritius Gymkhana Club offers a beautiful view of the surrounding highlands with the nearby volcano Trou aux Cerfs. The club is just three minutes away from the city center of Vacoas-Phoenix, and the next closest city of Curepipe lies just 12 minutes away. The Mauritius Gymkhana Club was established by members of the British navy between 1834 and 1844 and initially opened a 9-hole course which was officially confirmed for 1902. In the 1950’s, this was developed into an 18-hole parkland course with par 68. It features a 5,600-meter-long course with fairways lined by elm trees, some up to 200 years old, auracarias, palm trees, Gabon tulips, and Bougainvillea shrubs. The course does not have any water hazards, meaning that even inexperienced golfers can easily master it. The Mauritius Gymkhana Club’s practice area provides a putting and pitching area, but a driving range is not available. The course is the oldest 18-hole course in the Indian Ocean and is referred to as the fourth oldest golf course in the world.
