Nelspruit Golf Club

The Nelspruit Golf Club can be found in a suburb of Nelspruit, the capital of the South African province of Mpumalanga. It stretches across the terrain of the Mantumi Golf Estate, beneath precipices in the hills of the Lowveld. The trip from Nelspruit’s center to Nelspruit Golf Club takes ten minutes via Ferreira Street. Nelspruit International Airport is also just 20 minutes away. The club was already founded in 1928 and moved to its current location in Nelspruit in 1939. Initially, only a 9-hole course was opened, which was eventually developed into an 18-hole course by golf course architect Robert Grimsdell in 1967-68. This layout was redesigned by Peter Matkovitch in 1998. At the same time, the Mantumi Golf Estate was established. The current Bushveld Course is an 18-hole parkland course with par 71 and a length of 6,074 meters. Its layout displays mainly long fairways, crooked due to the slope and densely lined by indigenous trees, large greens, several doglegs, as well as numerous water hazards in the form of interconnected lakes, ponds, and streams. Water comes into play at 12 of the 18 holes, but golfers only need to play across it at holes 4, 5, 13, and 17. Particularly hole 17 requires a daring shot across a large lake. There are no fairway bunkers at the Nelspruit Golf Club, but instead strategically placed trees which assume their function as “bunkers in the air”.
