Pestana Alto Golf Course

The Pestana Alto Golf Course is located between the picturesque fishing village of Alvor and the Praia da Rocha with a view of the Monchique mountains. It is one of the most well-known courses of the Algarve and snakes through the park landscape with two valleys, characterized by carob, olive, almond, and fig trees, as well as pine trees typical for the region. Four kilometers from Alvor and five kilometers from Portimão, the Pestana Alto Golf Course is easy to reach via the EM531-1. From the Faro Airport, the course can be reached via the A22 in 50 minutes. Opened in 1991, the Pestana Alto Golf Course is the last course designed by the legend Sir Henry Cotton. After his death, the golf journalist Peter Dobereiner continued the course project. The 18-hole course, type parkland with par 72, is an athletic challenge that requires a fine touch from both beginning and experienced golfers with its slightly hilly terrain, wavy fairways, and elevated greens. The forward nine holes offer a majestic view of the bay of Lagos, the back nine holes lead through a picturesque mountain landscape. The highlight at the Pestana Alto Golf Course is the par 5-hole known as “the Giant” or “Sir Henry’s Challenge” par 5-hole – at 570 meters, of the longest in all of Europe.
