Pestana GramachoGolf Course

The Pestana Gramacho Golf Course is situated near the town of Carvoeiro at the foot of the Monchique mountains along the western Algarve coast. It belongs to Pestana Resort, one of the biggest golf and vacation resorts in the region. The golf course is only ten kilometers from Portimão and can be reached in 45 minutes from the airport in Faro via the A22. Originally designed as a 9-hole course by Ronald Fream in the 1970s, the Pestana Gramacho Golf Course was redesigned in 1991 with the help of the former number one golfer, Nick Price. Fream and Price redesigned the course into an 18-hole course with par 72 that impresses with its fast greens and partially hanging holes. It has a length of 6,107 meters and is located on wavy terrain surrounded by numerous almond, olive, and carob trees. Doglegs, bunkers, various differences in altitude, ponds, lakes, old trees, dry walls, and boulders give the course a challenging character. The Pestana Gramacho Golf Course is considered unique in continental Europe due to its 27 greens. It is also counted among the few golf courses in the world that have such a large number of greens spread over only 18 fairways. With its unusual design as a “Boutique Course,” the Pestana Gramacho Golf Course has already been used several times for the Portuguese Ladies Open.
