Sakabula Golf Club

The Sakabula Golf Club is situated in Merrivale, a suburb of the city of Howick in the South African province of KwaZulu-Natal. It is located on the grounds of the Sakabula Country Estate, a consolidation of 12 farms at the foothills of the Midlands and allows a wonderful panorama view of the Ukhahlamba Drakensberg with the Giant Castle and the Karkloof Range as well as the Midmar Dam nature reserve. From Howick’s center, Sakabula Golf Club can be accessed via the Main Road in ten minutes, and from the next largest city of Pietermaritzburg via the N 3 in about 15 minutes. From Durban, the route takes an hour, also along the N 3. The club was established in 1997 and calls the 18-hole Sakabula Golf Course its own, a parkland course with par 73 designed by Gerrie de Jong. The 6,319-meter-long course displays two very different 9-hole loops. The front nine run across hilly terrain with a view of the Drakensberg, while the back nine wind spread across flat grounds along a stream and a wetland as well as several ponds. The 5^th hole is particularly interesting, as it is very long and steadily runs uphill. Hole 10 has a streetlight at the tee box, and hole 14 is home to a large paperbark thorn tree. Sakabula Golf Club’s course is entirely fenced in and the only course in the province of KwaZulu-Natal rated as a par 73.
