The Sigona Golf Club is based in the small Kenyan town of Kikuyu on the edge of the Great Rift Valley. It lies on the hilly terrain of a former wattle plantation at a height of over 2,000 meters. From Kikuyu’s center, the Sigona Golf Club is quick to reach in eight minutes via the A104. Along the same route, the trip from Kenya’s capital of Nairobi to the club takes half an hour. It was founded in 1938, operated by the English plantation owner Berkley-Mathews, and first opened a 9-hole course in the same year which was positioned around an elephant waterhole. Golf course architect Tom Simpson was responsible for its design. Only in the 1970’s was the golf course at the Sigona Golf Club expanded to an 18-hole course with par 72. It has a length of 6,302 meters and features wavy, long, narrow fairways lined by exotic trees such as moringas, wattle trees, podos, or cape chestnuts. The differently sized greens are well protected by numerous green bunkers. Several difficult doglegs, considerable altitude differences, and many elevated tees provide a challenge on the course. The only water hazard is located at hole 11, at which golfers must play across a stream that crosses the fairway. The course’s layout is designed for championships and is home to some of the most beautiful fairways in Kenya.
