The Sunhills Country Club is situated near the Japanese city of Utsunomiya in the province of Tochigi, on the island of Honshu. It lies on hilly terrain in the middle of meadows and forests. From Utsunomiya’s center, the Sunhills Country Club is about half an hour away via Routes 63 and 73, while the trip from Tokyo takes about 100 minutes. It was founded in 1991 and contains two 18-hole courses designed by renowned golf course architect Robert Trent Jones Jr. The East course is a parkland course with par 72, measuring 6,155 meters and shaped by wide, wavy fairways lined by trees, as well as very difficult greens. Doglegs, small bunkers, and 7 water hazards contribute to the difficulty of this challenging course at the Sunhills Country Club. At the 12th hole, golfers need to play across trees on the fairway. The West Course, a parkland course with par 72, is the longer one at the Sunhills Country Club with 6,345 meters, but it presents considerably narrower fairways and fewer, but larger water hazards, as well as bunkers. The club’s practice area features a driving range for practicing long hits and a 3-hole short game area. In addition, there is a putting green. Trolleys, rental clubs, and caddies can be rented by golfers.
